Labor Day Weekend Book Haul

Guerrero

While friends left their apartment to get out of the city, we moved in.

On Sunday we took a long walk up Valencia. Shopping and people watching. We ended up at Mission Comics and I snagged myself a copy of Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz with artwork by Skottie Young.

I probably should have started with the first one, but in this story Baum uses the San Francisco 1906 earthquake as its jumping off point.

On that theme, walking back, we stopped at Dog-Eared Books and meandered a bit. After admiring it multiple times, in multiple bookstores over the years, I made the jump and purchased Paul Madonna’s All Over Coffee.

The pen and ink washes of the San Francisco neighborhoods and skyline are sparsely captioned. Each piece invites pause, reflection, and contemplation.

While at Dog-Eared, I spied
San Francisco Noir (Akashic Noir), a collection of mysteries set in the city.

San Francisco Noir 2: v. 2 (Akashic Noir) contains works from Mark Twain, Jack London and other well known  authors. Those two are going on the “to read” list for sure.

Something you should never doubt: Libraries save lives

Regina Calcaterra, author of Etched in Sand speaks about an almost unimaginable childhood with her 5 siblings. And their library card was their: “card to happiness.” The video is a book trailer for her memoir “Etched in Sand.

In the new issue of People magazine reviewer Caroline Leavitt writes, “Her book reminds us that it’s possible to suffer the unimaginable and still grow up to make a difference.”

Cards for the Birthday Girls

Untitled
Two of my nieces (sisters) have birthdays two days (plus 2 years) apart and this past weekend we got together to celebrate.

It’s been a pleasure to watch them grow into women and they are both wonderful mothers.

Renee’s card (top) was made with SEI scrapbook paper that I’ve had for a long time. I found a nice script R, traced the outline and cut it out of the pink patterned paper. The butterfly sticker is also from an old SEI kit. I mounted the butterfly on a foam dot, first dusting the back of the sticker with talcum powder to tame the glue.

I started Lupe’s card by adhering the blue washi tape in three strips. The stickers were all part of a set I got from a cute boutique in Palo Alto. I gave the banner letters the same treatment with powder and foam glue dots, raising them up off of the cardstock.

Happy Happy Birthday Ladies!
